October 16, 2012:  “I think that any young man who is going to let people decide his future for him and go along with it willingly is silly and so I said that to him,” said D.L. Hugley on BET’s “Don’t Sleep!” in response to Lupe Fiasco stating that he will not be participating in the upcoming presidential election.  “The problem with most young cats is they listen to other dumb-ass young cats.  Most young dudes are in jail for listening to a dude just as dumb and young as he is and I think ultimately you have to decide what kind of future you want to have.  It’s a misnomer to say that voting doesn’t work when most people don’t vote.  Here’s the thing.  We [African Americans] voted at a 58 percent rate at the presidential level.  It’s much lower than that at the local elections which decide what kind of schools people are going to have which decide what kind of programs [we will have].  We show up for the big stuff.  We show up for the telethon.  We don’t show up for the things that really decide what happens.  I believe that if somebody’s going to try to take something from me they are going to have to do it on my feet not on my knees.  That’s what I believe.  Now you can believe whatever you want to.  When old white men paid to have us not vote.  When 26 states are introducing bills to make it tougher to vote and you willingly do it that’s soft to me.  Boys do that.  I think that’s what children do.”

Fiasco has been under fire ever he released “Words I Never Said” in 2011 criticizing President Obama and stating on the record: “That’s why I didn’t vote for him, next one either.”  This led to a recent dispute between Hughley and Fiasco via Twitter.  Journalist Roland Martin was also bothered by Fiasco’s comments and retaliated on Twitter as well:  “I just read some comments about voting and @lupefiasco are some of the most ignorant, false stuff someone can say.”  Fiasco tweeted in response:  “Yo @rolandsmartin obama ain’t gone lose cuz of me and my raps dawg…Now I’m begging you bruh bruh.”
