November 1, 2012: “The marathon is this great platform every year for New York City,” said Mary Wittenberg, President & CEO of New York Road Runners during her conversation with Errol Louis on NY1’s “Inside City Hall.”  “What it does is it inspires people to get healthier and fitter.  It brings economic impact to the city typically about $340 million.  It helps us raise, last year, $34 million for over 300 charities that count on that support all year round.  In addition to all of that what we wanted to do is use that platform to get other people to help the relief recovery now.  So we started with ourselves.  We created the Race to Recovery campaign that will run now through the marathon.  We reached out to our partners starting with two key partners, our founding sponsor the Rudin family and our title sponsor ING, and I’m really pleased to share that New York Road Runners is making a commitment of $26.20 for every marathoner and guaranteeing a $1 million donation to the Mayor’s fund to advance New York City.  The Rudin family immediately responded with an astonishing $1.1 million of support as well and ING, fresh off an airplane, has committed to $500,000 in support.  In addition, the owner of Pasha who had two of his restaurants hurt in the storm donated $26,200 so over $2.6 million today with financial support going to this effort and that’s just the start.”
